ADHS Shelter To Be Open for 1 Day in August!

July 21, 2011

The ADHS is pleased to announce that it will be OPEN for one (1) day in August! On Saturday August 13, 2011 we will be open from 12 pm until 4 pm! We hope to have the doors open to the public one day per month to begin with and ultimately, increase our open hours as time/availability of volunteers permit.

Our shelter is currently home to 8 dogs, 34 cats and over 25 small animals. Animals for adoption will be available for viewing during our OPEN day (August 13th).

Donations can be delivered on August 13th directly to our shelter. Will you donate ONE item from our Wish List?? If everyone in our community donated ONE item from our list per month, we would be able to help so many more animals in our community!

ADHS Shelter ~ A Home to Animals Who Haven't One

May 24, 2011

Our shelter is currently home to 23 cats, 9 dogs, and 13 small animals. Without the shelter, these animals would have had no where else to go. Thanks to your donations and continued support, we are able to offer a temporary refuge for these animals.

Volunteers are at the building twice a day for 2 to 4 hour shifts in order to care for these animals. Our volunteers complete all sorts of jobs including walking, cleaning and feeding the animals. More volunteers are needed to help with the vast amount of jobs! If you can offer your assistance, please call. Volunteers are needed both for administrative work and directly with the animals.

Just as we have for the last 23 years, we continue to function entirely with volunteer efforts! There are no paid employees working at our shelter.

The shelter is currently open in a "by appointment only" manner or for special fundraising events and adoptathons!

ADHS Receives a $2,000 grant from the Build-A-Bear Workshop

January 2011

It is a constant struggle for ADHS to find the funds to spay and neuter all the cats that come into our care as well as those cats in feral colonies in our area. We are pleased to announce that the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation granted us 2000 dollars for our cat spay and neuter program in early January, 2011. This money will be used to spay and neuter cats in the care of ADHS in the spring of 2011.

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation is committed to making life more bearable for children, families and pets, in need of a helping paw. With the sale of each full-sized Bearemy’s Kennel Pals® friend -- a collection of Build-A-Bear Workshop® plush dogs -- one dollar is donated to domestic pet programs including local animal shelters, stray pet rescue and rehabilitation organizations, and pet education programs around the country. These funds are available to qualified non-profit organizations in the United States and Canada. Visit www.buildabear.com for more information. ADHS appreciates all grants and community donations to our spay and neuter programs

ADHS Shelter Complete!

January 23, 2011

Our new animal shelter on the 4th line of Adjala-Tosorontio is complete. Construction on the 3600 square foot shelter was completed this fall and ADHS members have been busy equipping the shelter with office furniture, an alarm system, a computer system, fencing and all the other items needed to house animals.

The new shelter will only be open on a very limited basis in 2011, and run only by volunteers, due to the tremendous cost of building the structure. Until ADHS recovers financially from the build, a limited number of animals (cats, dogs and “pocket pets”) will be sheltered in the building.

Volunteers will be sharing shifts and responsibilities for caring for these animals. The costs of operating our new shelter are tremendous. Hydro, taxes, vet bills and animal food will challenge our limited finances in 2011.

ADHS Shelter Nears Completion!

August 15, 2010

Our new shelter is nearly finished! As of August 15, our new shelter on the 4th line of Adjala-Tosorontio is about 90% complete.

Currently, the building is waiting for the addition of hydro so that installations can be tested. Floors and millwork have to be completed as does the sod and outside walkway before an occupancy permit can be granted. Security cameras will also be installed shortly. ADHS anticipates that an occupancy permit should be granted around mid-September.

There is lots of work to do before the shelter can open, however. We are still looking for direct donations or money to purchase items such as cat cages, office furniture, a computer system, and dog run doors. Outside dog run fencing must also be installed.

We anticipate that it could be some time before the shelter officially opens its doors. We still must fundraise to cover operating costs. We anticipate that the shelter may open on a part-time, limited basis, staffed by volunteers until we are confident we have the funds to sustain our operations.

We're Building A Shelter!!

December 19, 2009

A combined federal and provincial infrastructure grant of $533,334 was announced on December 19th by local MP, the Honourable Helena Guergis and Ontario Minister of Culture, the Honourable Aileen Carroll. ADHS is providing the final one third of funding for the building located on the 50 acre property located on the fourth concession of Adjala-Tosorontio.

The 3600 square foot facility will contain cat condos, dog runs, adoption rooms, animal viewing areas, an isolation room, bathing area, small animal room, seminar room as well as office space. The facility is designed to be an environmentally friendly structure using an above ground septic system, geothermal heating and cooling and natural aggregate pathways and parking lot.

The construction of this shelter is the culmination of 21 years of fundraising efforts by Alliston & District Humane Society volunteers. This affiliate has no paid employees and relies on community support at its fundraisers as well as donations to fund services.

Shelter News ~ Our Shelter Vision

February 17, 2009

Since the formation of our dream, The Alliston & District Humane Society, in March 1988, it has been in the hearts and minds of our volunteers and board members to have a shelter we and the animals can call home. Through countless hours of planning, fundraising, and general volunteer work, we now have the resources to begin the creation of putting our vision into reality.

Stay tuned as our saga continues.

Land Purchased!

June 12, 2002

On June 12, 2002, the ADHS purchased 49.75 acres of land with plans to build a shelter as soon as finances and resources allowed. We purchased the land with funds raised from fundraising events and donations. It is located on the 4th Concession at the 5th Sideroad of Adjala-Tosorontio. We found this land after a long search, as the criteria required to build a shelter is quite involved. It is a serene location with 2 ponds and lots of space surrounded by farmland.
