We're Building A Shelter!!!!

The Alliston & District Humane Society (ADHS) is thrilled to announce they are building a long awaited animal shelter and the walls are up and the roof is on.!!!. . A combined federal and provincial infrastructure grant of $533,334 was announced on December 19th by local MP, the Honourable Helena Guergis and Ontario Minister of Culture, the Honourable Aileen Carroll. ADHS is providing the final one third of funding for the building. Construction will begin in the spring of 2010, on the 50 acre property located on the fourth concession of Adjala-Tosorontio. The 3600 square foot facility will contain cat condos, dog runs, adoption rooms, animal viewing areas, an isolation room, bathing area, small animal room, seminar room as well as office space. The facility is designed to be an environmentally friendly structure using an above ground septic system, geothermal heating and cooling, solar tube lighting and natural aggregate pathways and parking lot. Roger Golden of the firm Michael Thomas Group has been hired as project manager and tendering will begin in early 2010.

The Alliston & District Humane Society, an affiliate of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), provides a wide variety of services to New Tecumseth, Mulmur, Adjala-Tosorontio and the villages of Cookstown, Rosemont, Hockley and the Town of Schomberg. Each year, volunteers field thousands of calls regarding lost, found, abandoned or mistreated animals. Their lost and found service works with township Canine Control Officers to reunite animals with their owners and find foster homes for abandoned or stray animals. Their adoption service helps to place animals in good homes while their wildlife volunteers work to provide advice and rescue local wildlife. ADHS’s animal cruelty officer Jerry Higgins, named the OSPCA’s Volunteer Agent of the Year in 2009, works tirelessly to investigate cruelty complaints and enforce animal cruelty laws.

The construction of this shelter is the culmination of 21 years of fundraising efforts by Alliston & District Humane Society volunteers. This affiliate has no paid employees and relies on community support at its fundraisers as well as donations to fund services.

ADHS still needs support from the community to continue its day to day operations as the building is constructed. To donate, please mail your donation to the Alliston & District Humane Society at P.O. Box 378, Beeton, Ontario L0G 1A0 or donate online by clicking on “Donate Now”. If you would like a donation picked up, please call 705-458-9038 and leave a message on the adoption line. ADHS Vice President Ernie Ogle is available at 705-458-1510 to discuss the shelter and donations of supplies or labour. A charitable receipt can be given for all donations of ten dollars or more

Please note the land the ADHS owns in Adjala-Tosorontio was PURCHASED by the ADHS. The money was raised after many years of volunteer fundraising efforts.

The Alliston & District Humane Society offers a lost and found reporting service to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Please check that the identification on your pet is legible and current. If you have moved and your pet is microchipped please update your microchip records.

The lost and found reporting service is manned by a volunteer who donates their time and long distance charges. While the ADHS is happy to provide this service it would really be appreciated if the public could please call back when their pet returns home so the file can be closed.

The ADHS is run solely by the efforts of unpaid volunteers. There is no animal shelter building, all animals are housed in volunteer's own homes. The foster home provides food, shelter, litter, transportation, training, endless patience and time, both with the animal and the public. The ADHS foster home volunteers are very special people and countless animals lives have been saved as these wonderful people open their doors to take in just one more.

If you should lose or find a dog, the first person you should call is the canine control officer employed by your township to pick up stray dogs. The second place to call would be the Alliston & District Humane Society which provides a lost and found reporting service to help reunite lost pets with their owners. The Alliston & District Humane Society also offers wildlife advice and assistance and cruelty investigations. The area covered by the ADHS is the townships of Adjala-Tosorontio, Mulmur, New Tecumseth, the town of Schomberg as well as the villages of Cookstown, Rosemont & Hockley.

If anyone is interested in learning more about helping with the wildlife aspect of the ADHS please call Ernie at (705) 458-1510.
